“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty…”
-Wendell Phillips American abolitionist and orator 1811-1884

The past few months conservatives have taken some hits in the political arena. This is a result of a combination of factors: questionable candidates, open primaries and a Republican party that seems to treat its conservative base as a bastard child; not its foundational core. Quite frankly, I am disheartened as a conservative to have the party nominate someone, though honorable, who seems to have contempt for so many he claims to represent. From McCain-Feingold to McCain-Kennedy, this candidate showed his disdain for the most sacred freedom (political speech) and threatened the basic concept of the rule of law (amnesty). With that said, he is far better than the socialist, surrender party of the Democrats whose policies in the areas of: economic, cultural and national security endanger our very existence. Read 20th century history, specifically the decade of thirties, and you realize that this not hyperbole, but truth. With this in mind, where do conservatives go from here?

I am conservative both socially and economically because I employ my head along with my heart to find that there are absolute truths in this world. This process has yielded the belief that:

  • Life begins at conception; that is a fundamental truth and science is beginning to catch up to it. Once we recognize that fact; opposition is just sophistry through obfuscation.
  • Traditional marriage is the foundation of the family and bastardization of it will have dire consequences.
  • Fundamental Islam represents the greatest threat to our freedom currently and must not be neglected but challenged philosophically, economically and militarily. The doctrine must be outed for what it is, a religion war and subjugation. For the record there are peaceful, patriotic Muslims who do not follow the doctrine, but the doctrine is the doctrine.
  • Low, defined taxes, free trade and open markets allow the greatest opportunity to expand one’s individual freedom. This is backed up by 200 years of trade history and goes to the heart of our nation’s founding.
  • The recognition that God and the Judeo Christian foundation of this country is the antidote to any form of fascism that could potentially be legislated.

These precepts are all under attack and one election will not change or diminish the assault on these values by the liberal establishment. Liberalism cannot be negotiated with; it must be defeated. In light of this battle and even in this election year, I am optimistic that conservatism will eventually win the war. Vigilance is the answer. Let us not forget about the over 2/3 of the states have Defense of Marriage legislation, science advancements bring more evidence that life begins at conception and economic gains over the past 50 years have been made when the advancement of low taxes and free trade have been embraced by government.

People are learning more each day about the doctrine of Islam through the likes of Bill Federer (www.americanminute.com) and Robert Spencer’s (www.Jihadwatch.org) works as well websites like Frontpagemag.com. Leaders, even Presidential candidates, are speaking out against the cultural decline as well as invoking our Judeo/Christian foundation. Lastly, the amnesty bill was defeated when Laura Ingraham rallied the conservative forces of reason to call their Congressmen to reject the amnesty that was being shoved down the American people’s throat.

Whether the most conservative candidate wins is not the issue, it is that Conservatives continue leading with their values. Conservatism can only lose, if we lose our will to exercise vigilance.
