If GITMO is open in a year…
On Friday’s Nothing But Truth, Congressman Pete Hoekstra predicted GITMO would still be open in a year. If this prediction holds true, then I can only deduce President Obama’s decision to close it was based on political reasoning; not national security. The implications of this conjecture are truly frightening. The Commander in Chief of the United States, put politics above the lives of the Americans, who he was sworn to protect; a charge that, if proved, should yield a movement in congress to remove him from office. In fact, it was a charge the far left consistently leveled at the Bush administration regarding the Iraq War. The evidence to support the left’s charge was, at best, dubious. Their chief source was proven by the Bi- Partisan Senate Intelligence Committee to be a liar: Norman Podhoretz details this in his piece Who Is Lying About Iraq?: [Wilson] also told committee staff that he was the source of a Washington Post article . . . which said, “among the envoy’s conclusions was that the documents may have been forged because ‘the dates were wrong and the names were wrong.’” Committee staff asked how the former ambassador could have come to the conclusion that the “dates were wrong and the names were wrong” when he had never seen the CIA reports and had no knowledge of what names and dates were in the reports.). The same committee concluded that there was no pressure put on pre-war intelligence analysts; thus clearing President Bush of the smear (pg. 358).
My disgust with the far left’s irresponsible behavior, along with my constant appeal for respectful, contextual and intellectual honesty when passing judgement, certainly begs the question: how could I make such an incredible charge? Have my passionate objections on policy pushed me to jump the shark? An extraordinary charge needs extraordinary evidence. I have used these very words in response to numerous callers making outrageous conspiratorial claims. This conjecture deserves the same scrutiny. President Obama has been a vocal critic of the Iraq war calling it a distraction, stating we got side Iraq. Also, he has changed the title of the war in Afghanistan to “overseas contingency operations.” He endured a dictator’s anti-American tirade, embraced a man who revered to his predecessor as the devil and has reached out to a regime that has slaughtered Americans for the last 30 years. These are all things I disagree with…Big Time! Yet, they are disagreements on policy and style; they do not call into question the President’s legal obligation under the oath of office. In President Obama’s first week, he issued an executive order to close GITMO within a year. He did this without having plan. How can a Commander In Chief decide to close a detention facility where the most brutal terrorists in the world are held, and not first ensure the security of his nation? Again, I hope I am wrong about our President, my President, but if GITMO is not closed in a year; then some questions should be asked
